Why this project is important

Currently periodontal disease around the world is being addressed by treating the symptoms of the disease not the cause of the disease and this needs to change.  This project is important because  1. We have the cure and the preventative technology to eliminate periodontal disease; 2. Periodontal Disease not only causes the loss of the supporting structure of your teeth (bone, periodontal ligaments, and gum/gingival tissue) and eventually your teeth but it can cause damage and disease throughout your entire body; and  3.  By eliminating the cause of periodontal disease we will save lives, we will make the people of earth healthier, and we will save untold Trillions of dollars in care and lost time costs.

Man has suffered seemingly from the beginning of existence from Dental Caries (Decay) and Periodontal (Gum) Disease with resulting loss of tooth structure, recession and loss of supporting structures and loss of the teeth themselves as well as all the associated pain, discomfort, aggravation and expense without any sure way to prevent this from happening.  All past efforts such as tooth brushing, flossing, irrigation, use of fluoride, sealants, mouthwashes, toothpastes, etc. have only reduced the amount of disease and destruction not eliminated it. Sadly, almost without exception the public thinks that is the best we can do, that there are no better answers, and that dental disease and losing teeth are just part of life.

The impact of dental disease worldwide is staggering: Besides the untold pain, suffering, and impact on systemic health, the global impact of dental disease amounts to well over US $400,000,000,000.00 dollars (400 Billion).   Although there are no statistics of the number of days of work lost due to dental disease worldwide, the US Dept of Health states that 164 million hours of work are lost each year in the United States alone.

According to the CDC (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 47.2% of adults aged 30 years or older have some form of periodontal disease; that is 93,000,000 (93 million adult Americans).  My own experience over the past 50 years and those of hundreds of dentists I have talked to puts this figure much much higher.  In fact, when taking a bacterial culture from under the gums of adults as we have done for over 25 years, I and other dentists have confirmed that it is rare to find someone who does not have large numbers of periodontal pathogens In their mouth.  Exact statistics on the incidence of gingivitis and periodontal disease in Europe and Worldwide are hard to find, but based on US Statistics it is shocking to realize that worldwide it is probable that more than 1.8 Billion people on Earth suffer from some sort of periodontal disease.

An alarming fact is that the bacteria that cause Gingivitis and Periodontal disease can go anywhere in the body and have been shown to be associated with Heart Disease, Stroke, Diabetes, Obesity, adverse pregnancy outcomes, Osteoporosis, Respiratory Disease, Cancer, higher risk of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Alzheimer’s and Dementia as either a contributory or causative factor in the same way smoking is associated with Cancer.

THE SOLUTION

The fact is there is a solution that is proven and has been working for some time.

Identify the bad/pathogenic/disease causing bacteria

  1. Use a Phase Microscope (In general a healthy mouth with healthy bacteria show no mobility ( obvious movement of the bacteria) when looked at under this microscope and the opposite is true (lots of mobility for active periodontal disease with bad/pathogenic bacteria)  The phase microscope is by far the easiest and least expensive screening device that exists, literally pennies per patient.
  2. Micro-ident (Can identify up to 10 of the most common periodontal bacteria and determine which antibiotic will be the most effective against them.)
  3. Other tests: salivary, etc.
  4. Get rid of the bad bacteria without any harm to the beneficial bacteria.
  5. Use sub-gingival irrigated antibacterials at home and in the dental office. At the moment the only easy one is Therasol by Oratec. ,   A supersaturated solution of baking soda works but delivery devices are currently not practical (One aspect of our project will be to have an irrigation device developed that is practical and inexpensive)
  6. Use antibiotics
  7. Increase the efficiency and effectiveness of home care/oral hygiene.
  8. Use a oral hygienist as a teacher/coach
  9. Use the most effective technology available.
  10. Use where dental care is available:   Non-surgical cleaning and debridement of all sub-gingival areas. In our offices we have gotten 95% resolution/healing to normal crevice depths of periodontal pockets of 5mm or less from this procedure when it is preceded by a. and/or b. plus c.

Please note that this project is even more important in third world and developing countries and in any population that cannot get or has little access to regular dental care.   We believe by educating the people in these populations about periodontal pathogens and by giving them simple tools to use at home including how to use an inexpensive antibacterial such as baking soda, our educational project, even without professional dental care, can have a major impact on reducing periodontal disease and the resulting damage to the oral and  systemic structures of the body.   I would predict that without doubt this project could help reduce significantly the incidence of Type II Diabetes, Heart Disease, Stroke and a host of other systemic diseases.  We also believe that once any population knows what these pathogens can do to the body, there will be an increased demand in the countries where this happens for more public health measures with regard to treating periodontal disease.

It is true that this project is mainly aimed at eliminating early and new cases of periodontal disease because advanced cases with significant periodontal deformities do require skilled professional dental care to resolve, BUT THIS PROJECT WILL FORCE THE DENTAL PROFESSION WHEREVER WE CAN EDUCATE THE PUBLIC TO START TREATING THE CAUSE OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE NOT JUST THE SYMPTOMS.  MOST IMPORTANTLY IT IS THE FIRST STEP NECESSARY TO ELIMINATE  PERIODONTAL DISEASE AND THE ORAL AND SYSTEMIC DAMAGE CAUSED BY THESE PATHOGENS.
